2016 Inaugural Awards Luncheon:
Members Vote to Provide Fresh Food Connect with $100,000
Over 120 members and community supporters gathered at the Wellshire Event Center on Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 to hear presentations from the nonprofit finalists who were selected through a rigorous grant review process to present on their organization and proposal to use $100,000 to create transformative change in the community.
Fresh Food Connect, a local nonprofit collaborative comprised of Groundwork Denver, Denver Urban Gardens and Denver Food Rescue, uses technology to increase the availability of affordable produce to low-income families, increases jobs for youth and decreases food waste. They were selected by members who voted on site and to members who had submitted votes by proxy.
Fresh Food Connect will use the funds to invest in technology improvements and food delivery infrastructure, allowing the organizations to expand the project, reach more gardeners and redistribute more food in metro Denver neighborhoods.
Co-founder, Cathy Murphy, remarked, "We are very happy and proud to be part of this community of women willing to donate $1,000 each along with time and talent, to bring us to this point - the award of Impact100 Metro Denver's first $100,000 grant."
“We are truly honored to have been selected for the first Impact100 Metro Denver grant. These funds give Fresh Food Connect the opportunity to take our program to a whole new level to ensure that everyone in Denver has access to fresh, affordable food, said Wendy Hawthorne, Executive Director of Groundwork Denver.
Impact100 Metro Denver awarded the two other finalists, Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners and Scholars Unlimited with $3,500 each to support their important work in the community.
Impact100 Metro Denver will now focus on membership renewal and new member recruitment in order to continue and grow the grant program. The next award cycle will begin with members' selection of grant focus areas and the subsequent distribution of the 2017 grant guidelines to area nonprofits.
